West Ham United legend James 'Ginge' Collins is launching a new sporting career with a professional boxing debut this Saturday. The former defender will face opponent Big Stacks at the Copper Box Arena on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Collins, who made over 200 appearances for the Hammers across a decade, retired from football in 2019. Since then, he has worked as a media pundit and co-hosts the Iron Cast podcast. Now 43, he is ten years older than his 33-year-old opponent, whose real name is Charlie Robert. The heavyweight bout is part of the undercard for a main event featuring Joey Essex versus Dapper Laughs.
A new challenge
"I have been training really hard in the gym and am looking forward to getting in the ring for my first proper boxing match!" Collins said. He added that he feels fitter and has enjoyed the process, meeting incredible people who have offered advice. The fight was announced by Adam Brooks of Misfits Boxing on social media.
Collins expressed a hope that a big crowd of West Ham supporters would be there to see him. "Now it’s up to me to put all that hard work and advice into action in the ring on Saturday night," he stated. The venue is near the London Stadium, where West Ham fans have previously turned out to support other boxing events. The club's current squad will be in action the night before, hosting Queens Park Rangers in a key Championship fixture as they aim to maintain their strong position in the standings.
From Boleyn to the ring
The defender's final game for the club was at the Boleyn Ground in 2016. He was part of the famous 'Great Escape' side in 2007 and helped West Ham reach the 2006 FA Cup final. His move into boxing follows other footballers like Wayne Bridge and Rio Ferdinand who have tested themselves in the ring, while former Hammers Julian Dicks and Jimmy Bullard turned to professional golf.
West Ham's current squad, sitting second in the Championship, faces a key home match against Queens Park Rangers on Friday. Collins will look to channel the same competitive spirit that served him on the pitch when he makes his walk to the ring the following night. The club's next run of fixtures is key, and Collins's debut provides a unique sporting crossover for fans. Tickets and VIP packages for the event are available online.
