West Ham have already returned to the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League, and the club have made no secret of their desire to get straight back up. Nuno was retained despite finishing 18th last season, having previously taken Wolves from the Championship to the Premier League. As of the final 2025 table, West Ham United finished 18th in the Premier League, with 39 points from 38 games, and a recent form of WLLLW. Fernandez has come a long way, released into non-league football during the pandemic, the London-born defender eventually earned his chance at Peterborough United before joining Rangers in July 2025. He signed a four-year contract at Ibrox after making 42 appearances for Peterborough during the 2024/25 campaign. His first few months in Scotland were hardly smooth sailing. Under Russell Martin, opportunities were limited. Then came the change in management. Fernandez flourished under Danny Röhl, becoming a regular at the heart of the Rangers defence and earning his first Nigeria call-up in March. He scored on his first international start against Jordan and finished the 2025/26 campaign with six goals in 27 Rangers appearances. That rise also earned him a place in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year. Suddenly, the player Rangers signed from League One looked like a very different proposition. Being 1.98m tall, Fernandez gives Nuno exactly the sort of physical presence Championship football can demand. He is strong in the air, aggressive in duels and comfortable enough in possession to play from the back. There is a gamble here, of course. £21m is serious money for a Championship club, particularly for a defender who has only one full season of top-level Scottish football behind him. But West Ham aren’t shopping in the bargain aisle. They need a squad capable of dealing with 46 league matches, relentless away grounds and the pressure that comes with being one of the division’s biggest promotion favourites. Fernandez gives them a good option. Leverkusen’s involvement is perhaps the most revealing part of the story. The Bundesliga side had already stepped up their pursuit after Fernandez’s outstanding first season in Glasgow, and reports in June suggested fresh contact had been made with Rangers.
