West Ham United have signed Joel Veltman, a 34-year-old Dutch defender, on a one-year contract with an option for a further year. The experienced right-back becomes the Hammers' second summer signing after Keiber Lamadrid's loan was made permanent from Deportivo La Guaira.

Veltman arrives in east London having made 191 appearances in a successful six-year spell with Brighton. He was a product of Ajax's prestigious academy and made his debut at the start of the 2011/12 season. This marked the beginning of a distinguished spell at the Johan Cruijff Arena, making 246 appearances, clinching three Eredivisie titles, and being named captain in 2017.

What happened?

Veltman was a key player in Ajax's continental success, helping them reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019. He also established himself with the Netherlands national team, playing for the youth ranks and helping them reach the FIFA World Cup semi-finals in Brazil.

Why it matters for West Ham United

The signing of Veltman is a significant coup for the Hammers, who are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. With 191 appearances in the Premier League, Veltman brings valuable experience to the table, and his ability to play in multiple positions will be a valuable asset to the team.

What comes next?

West Ham United are set for a busy few weeks as the transfer window comes to a close, with several new arrivals expected as they chase Championship promotion. The Hammers return to competitive action this weekend, hosting fellow Sky Bet Championship side Portsmouth in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Veltman will wear the number 32 shirt, the same number which was previously worn by the outgoing player. He expressed his delight at joining the Hammers, saying: "I'm delighted to have signed and I can't wait to get started. The project here really excites me, I spoke to Nuno as well as my family and my agent and everything added up."
