West Ham United's quest for immediate promotion back to the Premier League begins away at Burnley in our 2026/27 EFL Championship opener on Sunday afternoon. After completing pre-season unbeaten - with a behind-closed-doors win over Colchester United, an emphatic 5-0 triumph at Stevenage and draws at Southend United, Rangers and 1. FC Magdeburg - the Hammers got the competitive action underway in fine fashion with a 3-1 triumph over divisional rivals Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup first round on Saturday. Boss Nuno Espírito Santo will now be looking for his side to utilise all of the positive momentum gained over the last few weeks on the road at Turf Moor, against a team who were relegated from the top flight alongside us last term. Burnley are sure to harbour similar promotion ambitions to West Ham this season, and new head coach Nicky Hayen will be itching to get off to a flying start in front of a home crowd in what is set to be his first taste of the English second tier.
